The network engineer career roadmap
Networking careers don't have one fixed ladder, but most people who end up senior went through a recognizable sequence of stages — even if they didn't plan it that way at the time.
Stage one: the ticket queue
Almost everyone starts here — help desk or NOC, closing tickets, learning how much of networking is actually "which cable, which port, which VLAN." This stage is undervalued in hindsight: the instinct for methodically isolating a problem gets built here, and it's the same instinct senior engineers use on much harder problems later.
Stage two: specialization
Somewhere around CCNA-equivalent knowledge, most people start gravitating toward a domain — routing and switching, security, data center, wireless. You don't need to pick forever, but picking something to go deep on is what turns "knows a bit of everything" into "the person people escalate to."
Stage three: design, not just operate
The jump from mid-level to senior is usually less about knowing more protocols and more about being trusted to make design decisions — this topology, this addressing scheme, this redundancy model — and to defend the tradeoffs. This is also where certifications like CCNP and CCIE stop being resume items and start actually mapping to what the job asks of you day to day.
Stage four: influence beyond your own network
Principal and architect-level roles spend less time in a CLI and more time setting standards other engineers follow — reference designs, hardware selection criteria, review processes. The technical depth from earlier stages doesn't go away; it becomes the credibility that makes the standards worth following.
There's no fixed timeline for any of this. What's consistent across people who reach the later stages is that they kept solving harder problems than their current title strictly required.
